when the sadness gets too heavy…

when the sadness gets too heavy
and spills out of your heart and eyes
there is the warm, round certainty
of a teapot – its lid neatly fitted
over the calming brew…

bees buzz in crimson tight blossom
on the Japanese maple and sunlight melts
across your breakfast toast…

when the sadness gets too heavy
the scent of white jonquils fills your kitchen
and you gaze at the jug that they sit
in and remember when you used it for milk
in your very first home…

when the sadness gets too heavy
autumn leaves scatter on a
wooden bench and yellow ginger flowers
take you back to your mother’s smile
in a tropical garden long ago…

when the sadness gets too heavy
these words appear on a page in your notebook…
